THE LITERACY COLLABORATIVE

What is the Literacy Collaborative?  Moody School received a grant worth $500,000 over 5 years to improve and enhance literacy instruction at the school.  The grant will provide long-term professional development which will lead to a new school-wide approach to literacy instruction.  The goal of the Literacy Collaborative is to ensure successful literacy achievement for EVERY child in the areas of reading, writing, and speaking.  The Collaborative model was created at Ohio State University and Lesley University in Massachusetts.

What has The Literacy Collaborative provided Moody School

Moody School has already begun to reap the benefits of the Literacy Collaborative grant.  Second grade teacher, Heather Rodman has received training to become the school's K-2 Literacy Collaborative Coordinator.  She oversees the training Moody teachers will receive using the Collaborative model. Eight other teachers also received initial Collaborative training last year.  With the grant money, Moody also hired a Reading Recovery teacher to help at-risk readers.  In addition, the grant has provided opportunities for some teachers to attend a literacy conference.

Other exciting additions have been two book rooms!  The grant money allowed for the purchasing of books, materials, and shelving for the new book room that is now accessible to all teachers.
