The People Empowering People program is designed to recognize the unique strengths, life experiences, and capacities of each person. It emphasizes the connection between individual and community action. The program was developed by Cherry Czuba, Extension Educator, Community Development/Families, UCONN Cooperative Extension System.
Organizations Mission and Goals: PEP is based on the empowerment of individuals. We defined empowerment as a multidimensional social process that helps people gain control over their own lives. We focus on empowerment as a dynamic process through which individuals reach their own goals.
Project need gap analysis rationale that includes a summary of the research that supports the project: The PEP program has been shown to help increase the effectiveness of parents. The program teaches skills to develop a nurturing family by getting to know themselves and how to advocate for themselves, their children and within their community. Outcomes from other sites using the program include:
- Personal strength and parent family relationships were significantly improved.
- Community involvement and empowerment was significantly changed.
- UCONN school of family studies – surveys at first session and after 10 sessions.
- Feedback sheets at each session
Description of project/program activities and timeline: The curriculum for the program is covered in ten weekly two-hour sessions on life skills. Sessions cover the following topics:
· Values clarification – understanding and respecting ones values,
- Verbal and non-verbal communication – Using “I” statements,
- Active listening – using reflective listening,
- Problem solving – learning the steps in problem solving,
- Understanding the helping role – inviting a guest speaker,
- Understanding ourselves and others as parents – learning about parenting styles,
- Understanding our children – analyzing ages and stages and handling misbehavior,
- Action planning – developing ideas for a community project,
- Community assessment – finalizing ideas for a community project,
- Community issue – inviting a guest.
Extended sessions may cover additional time on community project, more guest speakers or other topics requested by the group.
This program fits into the overall mission of Middletown schools, which includes “Through partnerships with family and community, our schools will promote the pursuit of lifelong learning, responsible citizenship and decision making in a culturally diverse world.” The school system also has a Parent Involvement Policy in accordance with “No Child Left Behind” which includes the Parenting, Communicating, Collaborating with the Community and Decision Making components for effective Parent Involvement in schools. We support this and other parent involvement activities through Title 1 funds as well as through collaborative efforts among agencies and businesses and grant writing initiatives to various foundations.
