Evaluation and Support

Excellent schools begin with great school leaders and teachers. The importance of highly-skilled educators is beyond dispute as a strong body of evidence now confirms what parents, students, teachers and administrators have long known: effective teachers are among the most important school-level factor in student learning, and effective leadership is an essential component of any successful school.

Educator evaluation contributes to the improvement of individual and collective practice. High-quality evaluations are necessary to inform the individualized professional learning and support that all educators require. Such evaluations also identify professional strengths which should form the basis of new professional opportunities. High-quality evaluations are also necessary to make fair employment decisions based on teacher and administrator effectiveness. Used in this way, high-quality evaluations will bring greater accountability and transparency to schools and instill greater confidence in employment decisions across.

CT Guidelines 2023

Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, all school districts in Connecticut are responsible for implementing the Connecticut Guidelines for Educator Evaluation (2023). These new guidelines will represent several shifts from the practices commonly in place based on the CT Guidelines for Educator Evaluation (2017). The shifts are most significant in the areas of standards and criteria; goal setting process; professional practice and student growth; evaluator/observer/stakeholder feedback and engagement; process elements, and dispute resolution. The Guidelines establish which elements are nonnegotiables and which should be implemented as best practices.

During the 2023-24 school year, Middletown Public Schools' Professional Development and Evaluation Committee will be meeting to develop our local evaluation system aligned to the new Guidelines. Updates to this work will be provided here.
