How has your Asian American and/or Pacific Islander heritage/ background influenced or shaped your life?

My Asian American heritage shaped me into the person I am today. Being raised on the principles, core values, and beliefs I grew up on influenced my way of being. Personally, it is the reason behind my good conscience, empathy, and giving and caring nature. My cultural traditions, family values, and experiences are instilled in me and are constant reminders for me to appreciate life and to be kind and forgiving.

In your opinion, why is it important for the MPS community to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month?

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month in Middletown Public Schools serves multiple purposes such as: cultural awareness and appreciation, representation and inclusion, sense of identity and belonging, and educational opportunities. Students and staff are able to learn about different cultures including AAPI histories, languages, traditions, and contributions in various fields such as education, science, arts, etc. It brings awareness to the challenges we face such as discrimination, immigration, and social justice movements, cultivating empathy and solidarity among individuals of all backgrounds. Including AAPI in the curriculum also allows those of us with AAPI backgrounds to feel represented, foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity, and embrace and empower our pride in who we are and where we come from. By recognizing AAPI Heritage Month, schools are able to demonstrate their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, creating a more welcoming and respectful environment for all students and staff to thrive by feeling seen, heard, and valued.

Music Teacher

Moody Elementary School

How has your Asian American and/or Pacific Islander heritage/ background influenced or shaped your life?

My Asian American heritage has greatly shaped my life. Growing up Asian American has given me a cultural perspective of patience, open-mindedness and respect. Every time I am able to visit my family in South Korea, I am able to witness the differences and similarities in culture and appreciate all that I have been able to learn from being a part of two cultures.

In your opinion, why is it important for the MPS community to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month?

I think it is important to celebrate AAPI Heritage month as I see this population growing in our community. I hope my AAPI students see me and know that they have someone they can connect with, share their story with and appreciates their unique culture.
