The Middletown Transition Center (MTC) serves students with special education services ages 18–22, providing a supportive environment where young adults develop the skills necessary for a successful transition to adult life. The program focuses on building independence, strengthening vocational readiness, and increasing students’ ability to navigate their communities with confidence.

At MTC, students explore their strengths, interests, and areas for growth while developing skills in independent living, employment, community access, and functional academics. Instruction and experiences are individualized and aligned with each student’s transition goals outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Students participate in a variety of real-world learning experiences, including community-based job training at local businesses such as Ace Hardware, a consignment store, school cafeterias, and CVS. These placements allow students to practice workplace expectations, communication, and job-related skills in authentic settings.

The program also emphasizes community engagement, with opportunities for students to build independence through activities such as banking, grocery shopping, using the public library, and navigating the public transit bus system.

Additional skill-building opportunities include meal preparation, laundry, budgeting, completing job applications, and practicing interview skills, all designed to support students as they prepare for adult responsibilities.

MTC also features an in-house Print Shop, which provides hands-on vocational training and allows students to develop practical work skills in a structured setting.

Through individualized instruction, community partnerships, and meaningful work experiences, the Middletown Transition Center helps students build the confidence, skills, and independence needed to lead fulfilling adult lives.
