Mural Club Backstory

Since 2011, the Middletown High School Drawing and Painting students have engaged in an annual mural project, a tradition born from the desire to give students a transformative, collaborative experience. Each year, senior art students work together to create a large-scale painting, adhering to core requirements that include the school, mascot, year, and references to both the art students and the community, all unified by an overarching theme. This framework encourages innovation and creativity; for example, one class re-imagined the school as a whimsical castle within a fairy tale theme. This process demands teamwork, as students brainstorm ideas, provide sketches, and contribute their diverse creative and technical skills to form a cohesive composition. The students take immense pride in their work, forging deep bonds and a sense of community as they push each other to create a high-quality, one-of-a-kind piece of art.

The mural project is more than just an art assignment; it's an opportunity for students to explore complex themes and bold ideas, giving them a powerful voice to share their unique vision. Past murals have allowed seniors to express complicated emotions and reflect on significant shared experiences, such as the 2022 graduates who depicted their high school years as the four seasons, with winter representing the time of isolation during COVID. These visually imaginative works forge a lasting connection with viewers, offering insights to the wider community and future students. Ultimately, the finished murals are displayed in the school hallways—a farewell gift that embodies the seniors' passion, dedication, and teamwork. Graduates leave with confidence and a powerful experience that prepares them to make their mark on the world.
